How lucky Strathcona was last week to have Paul Yee back to visit us! A former student of Strath who lived down the block, Paul Yee is an amazing author and an even more riveting storyteller. Our intermediate students were fascinated with Paul’s stories.

Above is an image of Paul Yee’s latest book; a collection of his stories paired with recipes. This would be a fantastic book to read aloud, in sections, and then to make the recipes with the students.

How lucky we were yesterday to have the dynamic local author Caroline Adderson present to our three Grade one English classes. Caroline launched by saying hello in sixteen different languages using cute speech bubble cut out pasted onto sticks, representing the diversity or languages and cultures of the kids in the audience.

Caroline Adderson then read us her newly published picture book, Norman Speak.

After the recess break, lovely volunteers from HSBC read with small groups of children in their classrooms, giving them another two books to take home.

It was a beautiful morning at Strathcona, with adults sharing their love of reading with our students.

How lucky we were yesterday to have the talented, funny and energetic author and illustrator (my favourite combo) Lisa Cinar present to our three English Kindergarten classes. Lisa Cinar inspired us by sharing how she was once a child who loved to draw, read and write and now she is an adult who draws, reads, and writes! Lisa was wonderful with the young students, but she would be great with older kids too!

Check out her work: http://www.lisacinar.com

You can also purchase Lisa’s fun colouring books and, me favourite, the dog colouring poster, at Dilly Dally, the lovely children’s store on Commercial Drive.

Thanks to First Books Canada, author Rachelle Delaney came to visit with our grade 3 classes! Rachelle was an amazing speaker. We were all intrigued by her inspiration for her novel, The Metro Dogs of Moscow, the real strays of Moscow and how some use the subway system to travel around the city. This novel was also chosen by VEPVPA (Vancouver’s principal and vice principal association), as this years special book that is given to each school library in the Vancouver School Board.

We are so lucky to have the amazing author Paul Yee come to visit us on Tuesday May 22. Paul Yee went to Strathcona School and grew up across the street. Paul Yee is the author of many favourite books and has written picture books, novels for kids, nonfiction for adults, and historical fiction. He often writes stories from a Chinese Canadian perspective, many of which teachers love to use with their kids.

How lucky we were on Friday February 25 at Strathcona Library to welcome graphic novelists Aaron Renier and Jason Shiga who ran an amazing, hands on workshop with Mr. Brown’s grade 6/7 class.

Using audience ideas, kind of like a comic improv, Aaron showed us how to use different elements of graphic novels while he drew a four panel story about Stick, Rock and Justin Beiber.

Jason adds an alternate ending!

Jason shows us how to make a basic interactive comic, testing our visual spatial intelligence.

The kids try out their ideas while Yukiko figures out how to explain the interactive comic design as origami (valleys and mountains).

A big thank you to Aaron, Jason, Yukiko, and all the other VPL and VSB staff who helped pull this inspiring event together!
