Happy National School Library Day! Throughout the province of BC, students and teachers are doing DEAR: Drop Everything and Read! Many Strathcona students will be participating.
In honour of the day, four classes will be participating in Book Cafe. The library will transform into a cafe setting (think white tablecloths, candles, and refreshments) and a small stage will be set up. Each class will have two wonderful presenters who will do book talks. The first two groups will hear about books from Sarah from the fabulous Kidsbooks and our lovely principal, Ms. Jorgensen, who will speak about connecting to people through books. The next two groups will hear from Ms. Daly, our awesome grade 6/7 teacher and avid reader, and Steve Valente, our fantastic SSW, who will interview a grade 7 student about how she transformed into a reader.
Book Cafe is intended to promote a love of reading and encourage a reading community to grow in our school. Grade 4 classes are targeted to address the typical grade four reading slump. Inspired by ideas in Steven Layne‘s book Igniting a Passion for Reading. Caroline Lay, the Inner City Project Teacher, and I have been working with grade four classes to encourage a love of reading.
Also in honour of NSLD, don’t miss the engaging Eric Meyers from UBC, who will speak about Cyber Safety.
