I bought a bunch of these Blastoff Readers thinking they would be perfect for grade ones – and they are. Simple text, nice colour photos, limited sentences per page, larger font, bold key words… these a great for early researchers.
With two grade one classes, Ms. Lay, the Inner City Project teacher, and I worked with pairs of students who selected an animal to learn about, read the book, selected one fact, and created a short keynote presentation that included that fact and a title page using our new iPads. Whew! What a challenging and fun project!
I recommend these early nonfiction books for both research and recreational reading. While they don’t include all the text features I love about nonfiction books, they are well designed and accessible for kids.
Also available for non animal topics such as dump trucks, clouds, and forests.
